The Black Satellites edged closer to a place in the round of 16 with a 3-2 win over South American youth champions Argentina.

The Adrian Cubas got the first sight of goal for the Argentinians but Lawrence Ati got down early enough to save his shot. Soon afterwards Angel Correa dribbled into the box but skied his shot over the bar, to the relief of the Ghanaians.

Godfred Donsah and Clifford Aboagye managed to test Augusto Batalla from distance and Ghana finally broke through soon after. Aboagye carried the ball forward before playing in Benjamin Tetteh to finish in the top corner. Samuel Tetteh almost put Ghana up by two before the break but the Black Satellites went into half time a goal up.

Ati’s acrobatic save prevented an equaliser after Rodrigo Moreira headed the ball towards his goal.

Argentina threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser and Ghana made them pay. Samuel Tetteh was able to carry the ball forward at speed on the break before slipping the ball through for Aboagye to finish in the bottom left hand corner of the net. 10 minutes later Yaw Yeboah made it 3-0 from the spot after Samuel Tetteh was hauled down in the box by Facundo Monteseirin.

Ati fumbled a simple cross to gift Giovanni Simeone a simple goal and it looked like a fightback was on. Emiliano Buendai’s shot then flew past a host of Ghanaian defenders in the box which made for a nervy finish but Sellas Tetteh’s side held on for the win.

The Black Satellites will play Panama on Friday.

AFS Star Man: Clifford Aboagye
