REPORT: Austria 1-1 Ghana – U20 WC
Yaw Yeboah earned a draw for the Black Satellites after converting a late penalty in the final minutes of the game.
The Austrians looked dangerous from the first minute. After making a good off the ball run, Markus Blutsch was fed the ball in behind the Ghana defence but only managed to hit the side netting. The rest of the first half continued on in this manner. Austria were able to play balls in behind the Black Satellites defence and also found a lot of space between the lines, as they packed the midfield.
Owusu Bempah threatened Austria’s goal when he shot from long range, after a short Ghanaian corner. The attempt was well saved by Tino Casali.
In the 29th minute Austria centre back Lukas Gugganig won the ball in midfield and struck the ball fiercely on target but Lawrence Ati pulled off a good save.
It was Austria who went ahead early in the second half. Right To Dream Academy graduate Emmanuel Ntim dwelled on the ball and in turn had it stolen off him. Bernd Gschweidl managed to take advantage of the error and put Austria ahead.
After going ahead Austria sat back and asked Ghana to break them down. Apart from pressure applied by set pieces Ghana didn’t look like scoring. However, in the 90th minute Yaw Yeboah was dragged back in the box by Konrad Laimer and a penalty was awarded. Yeboah coolly placed the ball in the bottom left corner of the net to steal a point for Ghana.
All teams in Group B are level with a point each so Ghana’s game against Argentina on Tuesday may prove to be vital if they are to advance to the next round.
