Mali advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U20 World Cup after they dispatched Ghana with ease in a 3-0 victory.

Before Mali went ahead they were threatening to put the ball in the back of the Ghana net. Souleymane Diarra’s shot was saved by Lawrence Ati early on. However Ati couldn’t stop what was to come next. Mali’s intricate passing outside the Ghana box ended in Diadie Samassekou hitting a left-footed shot into the corner into the far corner of Ati’s goal to make it 1-0.

Emmanuel Boateng’s tireless running tireless running as a lone striker bore little fruit, as he had to shots saved by Digui Diarra in the 45th and 50th minute.

Soon after Boateng’s failed efforts Samassekou added a second for his side when he cut inside from the right wing and fired a shot into the top corner.

Ghana almost let in another goal in the same manner when Diedonne Gbakle cut in from the right wing. This time Ati was able to pull off a save.

As the Black Satellites were desperately pushing for goals, Mali landed a devastating blow on the counter. Aboubabacar Doumbia raced clear of Ghana’s defence before chipping Ati to make it 3-0.

After an impressive win Mali will go on to play Germany or Nigeria in Christchurch on Sunday.
