REPORT: Senegal eliminate Ukraine

Senegal made it to the quarter-finals of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand at the expense of Ukraine following a dramatic 3-1 win on penalties.

The game took placed at the North Harbour stadium in Auckland with goalkeeper Ibrahim Sy’s heroics in the shootout, saving three penalties helped Senegal qualify for the last-eight of the competition in their first ever appearance at the U-20 world cup.

Ukraine came into the game as favorites, having finished top of group A with seven points, scoring an impressive nine goals and conceding none compared to¬†Senegal who weren’t convincing, placing third with four points. However the former were left licking their wounds after the referee blew his whistle to end the game.

Both teams could not be separated as the game finished 1-1 after normal time and extra time. Artem Biesiedin gave the Europeans the lead in the 70th minute but it was cancelled out by Sidy Sarr who robbed Taras Kacharaba on the edge of the box before unleashing an unstoppable high into the net with less than seven minutes to end proceedings.

The young Teranga Lions will meet either Austria or Uzbekistan on June 14th.
