Africa’s big guns through to next round

Africa’s big guns managed to avoid embarrassment and secure a spot in the third round of World Cup Qualifying.

Egypt were 1-0 down on aggregate following an away defeat to Chad going into Tuesday’s return match.Mohamed El Neny and then Abdalallah El Saied put Egypt into the lead 10 minutes in as the Pharaohs went on to win 4-0.

After Comoros pulled off a surprise goalless draw at home, they looked to see if they could pull of another shock result away to Ghana in Kumasi. Unfortunately for the islanders it wasn’t to be. Mubarak Wakaso’s rasping free-kick gave the Black Stars the lead on 18 minutes. Jordan Ayew sealed the win for Ghana with an 85th minute goal.

Moses Simon’s excellent free-kick and an Efe Ambrose header secured a 2-0 aggregate win for Nigeria after they failed to break down Swaziland in the previous fixture.

Algeria battered Tanzania 7-0 in El Bouleïda, with Faouzi Ghoulam’s free-kick being the pick of the goals. Algeria won 9-2 on aggregate.
