Cape Verde stun Portugal
Cape Verde condemned Portugal to a 2-0 defeat at Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota, their first defeat against an African nation since 1986.
Fernando Santos’ fresh 11 named for the clash meant Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo was rested on the bench, as he witnessed his side fall short to the islanders on Tuesday night.
Cape Verde made a lively start, and after 11 minutes saw a shot deflected wide following good work from Odair Fortes, who gave the underdogs the lead on 37 minutes.
Goalkeeper Anthony Lopes got a slight touch to Fortes’ shot, which looped in to give the Blue Sharks a deserved lead in front of just 3,500 supporters inside the stadium.
And before the break, the African nation were celebrating again. This time Gege slotted in a kind deflection from Heldon’s cross to leave the Portuguese in disbelief.
Hugo Almeida had a great chance to pull a goal back for Portugal after the break, but Andre Pinto’s dismissal on 60 minutes made life a little easier for the visitors.
On a night when money was being raised for victims of a volcanic eruption on the Cape Verdean island of Fogo, this will live long in the memory of a nation who failed to exit their group at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
